DkIT Veterinary Nursing Students Raise Over €1300 For Animal Welfare Charity

27 November 2019

The DkIT Veterinary Nursing Society held a very successful fundraiser for Husky Rescue Ireland (HRI) on Thursday 21st November. All proceeds will be donated directly to Vetcare Rathcoole, who provide invaluable veterinary services to HRI.

Husky Rescue Ireland is a registered charity, which was set up to alleviate the suffering caused to huskies by irresponsible ownership, abuse and neglect in Ireland. The charity also assists in the re-homing of abandoned and abused huskies. A wide variety or Huskies and Akitas are available for adoption and fostering. HRI also appreciate other supports such as fundraising, donating or purchasing merchandise.

This year, HRI have been selected as the ‘Charity of the Year’ by the Irish Veterinary Nursing Association (IVNA). The IVNA are the representative body of veterinary nurses in Ireland and offer free student membership to all veterinary nursing students.

Lecturer in Veterinary Nursing, Doireann Dowling, who co-ordinated the fundraiser, said;

We are absolutely ecstatic to have raised such a significant amount of money for Husky Rescue Ireland.  The support we received on the stand was phenomenal.  We would like to thank everyone who supported this worthy cause last Thursday.

I have personally witnessed the hard work and dedication of the fantastic staff of Husky Rescue Ireland.  When HRI were based in Kildare previously, Andy took in two dogs for me on two separate occasions that were found straying – one on the road at a junction and another in a field.  Only for HRI, those dogs would have been killed on the road or shot in the fields respectively.  Neither dog was a husky either!  Andy is literally a lifesaver.’

Head of Department of Agriculture Food and Animal Health, Dr. Breda Brennan, commented;

We were delighted to support our students in fundraising for this very worthy cause.   In addition to developing the skills and knowledge they need to work as professionals in veterinary practice, our students are very cognisant of their wider societal role in engaging with animal welfare issues’.
